Update #1

I am required to apply for a EIPA File number from the Government of Canada.

I applied last night and received an email this morning with my file number (that’s quick for dealing with the federal government)

More results coming soon

Update #2

I was required to apply online for a GCkey (simple online process)

then you must apply to become a EXCOL (Export controls On-line) registered user, this requires a form to be filled out then emailed to the Department of Foreign affairs.

once you do this they email you back with an access code which is needed to log into EXCOL.

once you get the access code you can login and apply for an International import certificate.

this requires you to put in the details of the guns that you are bringing in as well as information about you and the exporter that you have chosen in the USA

I did this and received an approved certificate the next day.

that certificate was then emailed to the Exporter that I choose in the USA.

I am awaiting to hear from them the next steps.

The first shipment of rifles arrived, apparently shotguns need a different permit to export. The shotguns should arrive in the next week.

Worked out to be a lot more then I planned, as the reshipper that I used charged me a huge mark-up on the actual shipping charge.

I used to calculate a shipping price for the 3 boxes that arrived.

the total was $280.00 and I was charged $505.00 + $200 in labour and materials for packing.

They also charged me a $450.00 export license fee (of which their cost was only $50.00)

I will try someone different next time and report my results.

Blaine address for shipping to the USA

Prices at Restoration Hardware in the USA are significantly cheaper than in Canada.

Items of the size I was looking for were way to large to pay for shipping to Canada from the USA.

I decided to use a Blaine address service provider that I had not used before. I have yet to find one that is organized and decided to try one that is mentioned lots online. I will not tell you their name as I do not plan on using them again.

The furniture arrived fairly quickly and I got a phone call (no email option)to come pick it up right away.

I headed across the border with my truck and found that they were storing my new furniture outside in the light rain. When I called them before sending the furniture, they said they were equipped to handle large furniture items, but obviously they were not.

Luckily the rain had yet to soak through the boxes and the furniture was fine. I will once again look for someone better the next time I need to order some large items from the USA.

Running around Boxing Day and week looking for Trash Packs

My kids are into Trashies this month ( I think that they are called Trash Pack, but trashies sounds better to me)

What a great marketing plan these guys have put in place. There are approximately 150 little plastic figures in each series ( they have 4 series to date).

Each one comes in a plastic garbage pail, some are more rare than others but all will be junk and forgotten about in a month.

Toys R Us and London Drugs carry them in Canada at around $1.75 each

Sure enough they are available more plentiful in the USA for around $1.00 and even cheaper if you look online.

The company that makes them is called Moose out of Australia. The next thing I will check is whether or not they are even cheaper in Australia.

Hopefully we will find King Rat which is the rarest out of series one and sells for over $500.00, other good ones are soggy tomato and trash cat.

The hard part will be to convince my kids to sell them on Ebay.

Jan 15,2013 update:

In my quest to find the coveted king rat, soggy tomato and trash cat i noticed that series one is still available in retail stores across canada.

Sure enough they are selling for almost twice as much as Canadian retail on ebay because in the USA, Australia, UK and elsewhere they are sold out of series 1 (the green trash cans)

Check out the toys r us canadian website and they are selling the series 1 12 packs for $12.99.

Only problem is that they will not ship outside of Canada so you need a Canadian address to ship them too.

Magazines from the USA are on average 50 percent cheapet then in Canada

Another instance where Canadians are getting shafted is on magazine subscriptions.

Lets look at GQ magazine.

It is $12.00/year if you deliver to the USA

$22.00/year to ship to Canada

$58.00 a year to ship to the UK or Australia.

This is typical of all the big magazines. I am in the process of working with a US Reshipping company to have several magazines delivered there and then once a month I will get them to Reship to me in Canada.

I will let you know the results after I have tested this out.

Whenever someone tells me that I cannot do something it makes me more likely to try to do it.

Merry Christmas

Ted Baker and Thomas Pink cheaper in the UK

I got a day to head out to the outlet mall In Bicester Village on my recent trip to the UK. All the usual suspects are here at great prices including Gucci, Prada, Fendi, Armani,Dior +++++

The odd thing that I noticed was that the busy stores seemed to be the American Brands Levis,Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch. All the products are priced considerably higher than in the USA.

The opposite was true for UK brands Ted baker and Thomas Pink, the stores were not as busy and the prices were considerably cheaper than in the USA.

This limited research would lead me to believe that you should get a US address to purchase US brands in the USA and a UK address to Purchase UK brands in the UK.

My suitcase was full of Christmas presents when I came home and I have since placed an order online to ship to my UK address and then reship to Canada.

Must be cheaper to produce in the USA

Oriental Trading Company needs a shackup, maybe Warren Buffet will deliver (and by deliver I mean outside the USA)

This post is not about the recent purchase of Oriental Trading Company by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway for $500 million

It is about how they can improve their service.

My wife tried to place an order having it shipped to Canada. (Canada is an option on the site)

Too bad that they will not take a Canadian credit card for payment. They as well make it almost impossible to enter an actual Canadian mailing address.

She had to resort to using her US mailing address at a reship company. She had already added this address to her Canadian credit card as a secondary billing address so there was no problem.

Oriental Trading Company has a lot of cool products that are hard to find elsewhere especially internationally

Virtually unknown online cosmetics store in the Top 100 Retailer list from my previous post

I noticed that Paula’s choice was popping up in the top 30 of my top 100 websites in the USA that international purchasers are purchasing from.

Paula’s choice has a large selection of products and they do ship internationally at reasonable rates.

upon further investigation of the site I noticed what I think is the reason foreign customers are shipping to a US location and then using a reship service to send it abroad.

They offer a reseller program (called the Partner Program) that gives you 40% off of all retail prices plus a lot of other benefits including:

-free shipping within the USA

-free samples of new products with every order

-free educational material

They specifically state that this program is not available in Canada.

you must have a US address to take advantage of this. Must be due to their agreements with large suppliers. But the huge discount offered makes in beneficial to deal with the extra steps required.
